The Pit and the Pendulum

As the walls got closer, I knew my time was running short. My only two choices were to fall into the pit or to be crushed by hot and moving walls. I was gonna just wait and see if the walls would stop but my fear kept me moving closer and closer to the pit. My only other option now was to jump into the pit and hope that the rats were no longer in it. I did not want to fall so I decided to jump. As I fell everything seemed to move in slow motion. I really just wanted this all to be over with but the world seemed to stop moving altogether. Then all of a sudden I heard the unmistaken sound of rats scurrying around. I knew my chances of getting away from them again were slim to none. All of a sudden I was in the pit surrounded by a thousand or more rats. I knew my life was over then. When they noticed me they all came over running and I gave a loud and deafening scream and.....

I would choose Edgar Allen Poe. His style of writing really creates an image of what is happening. Most of his stories are a way of describing what was kind of happening around him. They were also a way for him to tell how he was feeling in his own style.

Old Ironsides

I think that Old Ironsides is an awesome poem because of what it accomplished. It saved a ship that was going to be sold for parts. That very ship that Oliver Wendell Holmes said they should sink to show it honor is now a working ship again. I think it is so cool that writing a message like this is powerful because it can get certain things to happen, not always in the ways we want them too but they can persuade people into action.
